Sas·sy: lively, bold, and full of spirit; cheeky
Scrap·py: having an aggressive and determined spirit
Distinguishing the difference between these two words is SO important. Why? In my first year as a working adult, I’ve discovered there is a very fine line for women in the workplace who have that “sassy” ambiance, but who aren’t afraid to exert their “scrappiness.” The difference between the two can get a little perplexing, but there’s something extraordinary about bringing the two together to create that lively, bold and determined spirit.
I’m made for a fast-paced, competitive, and exhilarating workplace. I constantly seek adventure and new challenges where I can rise up. Like the Jennifer Lawrences and Mindy Kalings of the world who are so unashamedly themselves, I’m quick-witted, and I don’t take crap from anyone. Oh, and when I laugh, I roar. Sue me.
I found the equal balance of being sassy and scrappy comes by getting to know the people in your workplace, a great deal of determination, and working smarter.
Our favorite elementary school science guy once said, “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.” That’s right, ladies and gents. Bill Nye said it, so soak that in as you try to get the theme song out of your head.
Because they know you so well, you’ll find that people will take you more seriously while appreciating your sense of humor. You’re the person in the office who works longer hours to stay ahead of the game. You’re the person who fights for what she wants. Put these to practice, and who knows? You may just find the right balance and be sassy and scrappy enough to do it.
