I love babies. I am pro-choice. No, that does not mean I think abortion is always the go-to answer. I am pro-choice because I firmly believe every woman has the fundamental right to decide what course she’d like her life to take, whether it be becoming a mother or not becoming one at all. I am pro-choice because I trust women. I am pro-choice because I celebrate women. Women are more than just a vessel for a child to be born. Women are beautiful, complicated, capable, driven, unique, quirky, intelligent, and a whole slew of other great adjectives. Women are human beings who deserve to be respected enough that society doesn’t feel the need to police their every choice. I am pro-choice because I believe every child deserves to be wanted and to come into this world in a joyous manner. I am pro-choice because I believe in policies that support comprehensive sex education, accessible contraception, social support for pregnant women, fair maternity leave policies, and gender equality. By supporting these policies, abortion can also be avoided by having women educated and protected.
I love babies. But I have the right to decide when and how I want to start a family. I also have the right to change my mind about having a family. I have the right to be viewed as more than someone who is just supposed to be a mother. I have the right to live to my fullest potential. I have the right to map out my life.
